Nature’s fury struck Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district as a devastating cloudburst and landslides claimed at least seven lives and left several others injured. The disaster unfolded after continuous overnight rains triggered flash floods, cutting off villages and leaving a trail of destruction in the region.
Cloudburst in Kathua: Jodh Ghati Village Cut Off
The calamity hit Jodh Ghati village in Rajbagh, Kathua, during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday. Torrential rains caused sudden water surges, snapping road connectivity and damaging property. Authorities confirmed that access to the village was severely affected, making rescue operations more challenging.
A joint team of the police and SDRF rushed to the spot for rescue and relief efforts. Officials said further assessments of damage are underway, while locals reported widespread panic as water levels rose dangerously in nearby areas.
According to officials, seven people lost their lives in two separate incidents of cloudburst and landslides, while at least five others sustained injuries. The affected areas include Rajbagh, Janglote, Bagard, Changda, and Dilwan-Hutli under Kathua’s jurisdiction.
Though no major structural damages have been reported from all villages, the landslides have blocked routes and posed fresh risks to residents.
Rising Water Levels in Ujh River
The incessant rains have caused a sharp rise in water levels across water bodies in Kathua. The Ujh river is flowing dangerously close to the red mark, raising fears of potential flooding in low-lying areas.
District authorities have issued advisories urging locals to stay away from rivers and streams. Officials stressed that venturing near overflowing water bodies could put lives at risk.
Chief Minister Expresses Grief
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed sorrow over the tragedy. Offering condolences, he directed officials to initiate immediate relief and evacuation measures.
“The Chief Minister has expressed grief over the tragic loss of lives and damage caused by landslides in several parts of Kathua, including Jodh Khad and Juthana. He conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured, and assured all possible assistance,” his office said in a statement on X.
Train Services Suspended Between Udhampur and Pathankot
Adding to the crisis, railway authorities suspended train services between Udhampur and Pathankot due to relentless rainfall. Officials stated that tracks had become unsafe after over 10 hours of heavy rain, posing severe risks to passenger safety.
This precautionary suspension will remain in effect until conditions improve. Authorities reassured travelers that the decision was made purely in the interest of safety and security.
The Kathua administration is monitoring the situation closely. Relief teams, along with SDRF and local police, are engaged in round-the-clock operations. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
The Kathua cloudburst and landslides serve as another grim reminder of the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather events. While rescue operations are ongoing, the immediate focus remains on safeguarding lives and preventing further damage.
With rivers swelling, train services suspended, and rescue teams deployed, Kathua stands at the center of a severe weather crisis that demands caution, resilience, and quick action.
