Amarnath cave shrine with ropeway from Baltal

The Central Government has decided to link 18 religious and tourist destinations with ropeways, including the holy cave shrine of Shri Amarnath Ji in the South Kashmir Himalayas. The Amarnath Yatra, an annual pilgrimage lasting 45 to 60 days between June and August, currently requires pilgrims to undertake either the 38-kilometer-long Pahalgam track or the shorter but more challenging 13-kilometer Baltal route to seek darshan of the Ice Lingam of Lord Shiva.

With the proposed ropeway, the duration of the annual pilgrimage could be extended, and more devotees would be able to participate, as the difficult terrain currently prevents many from undertaking the journey.

Largest Ropeway in the Project

Officials have confirmed that the ropeway connecting Shri Amarnath Ji cave shrine from Baltal in Kashmir’s Ganderbal district will be the largest among the 18 proposed ropeways, stretching over 11.6 kilometers. This project aims to provide a cost-effective and convenient alternative for Shri Amarnath Ji pilgrims. At present, devotees either trek to the shrine or rely on helicopter services available from Pahalgam and Baltal. Additionally, mules and palkis are available for those unable to walk.

Benefits of the Shri Amarnath Cave Shrine Ropeway

The ropeway will significantly reduce travel time and make the pilgrimage smoother and more comfortable. It is expected to increase the number of pilgrims visiting the holy cave shrine, as many devotees currently refrain from the journey due to the rough terrain and high costs of helicopter tickets.

Government officials have invited proposals from consultants to develop Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for all 18 ropeways, including the Shri Amarnath Ji cave project. Once implemented, the ropeway will allow visitors to enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape.

Improved Accessibility for Pilgrims

This initiative will make the Amarnath Yatra more accessible to a wider range of pilgrims, including children, the elderly, and individuals with mobility issues. The project is expected to enhance safety and convenience for devotees, encouraging more participation in the revered pilgrimage.

In 2024, the Amarnath Yatra commenced on June 29 and concluded on August 19, spanning 52 days. More than 350,000 registered pilgrims participated in the pilgrimage, marking a notable increase from previous years. With the introduction of the ropeway, these numbers are expected to rise even further, making the spiritual journey easier and more inclusive for all.
