In a significant move to enhance the safety of pilgrims, the Jammu and Kashmir government has declared the Amarnath Yatra routes as ‘No Flying Zones’ from July 1 to August 10, 2025. The announcement was made by the Home Department of Jammu and Kashmir under the directions of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

No-Fly Zone for Aerial Devices

The directive prohibits the flying of any type of aviation platforms or devices, including:

  • UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles)
  • Drones
  • Balloons
  • Any other airborne devices

These restrictions will be in force along both yatra routes:

  • The traditional Pahalgam route
  • The shorter Baltal route

Exceptions to the Rule

The order, however, allows exceptions in certain cases such as:

  • Medical evacuation
  • Disaster management
  • Surveillance by security forces

A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) outlining the conditions and protocols for these exceptions will be issued separately.

Security Measures in Wake of Recent Threats

The decision comes after extensive discussions among various stakeholders, including security agencies, in light of the prevailing threat scenario. The April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives, has prompted authorities to bolster the security apparatus.

Centre’s Involvement

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) also advised that the entire stretch of the yatra should be declared a ‘No Flying Zone’ to safeguard pilgrims and infrastructure.
