In a display of sheer determination and skill, defending champion Sheetal Devi secured her second gold medal at the Khelo India Para Games 2025. She triumphed over Odisha’s Payal Nag with a score of 109-103 in a thrilling women’s compound open final held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday.
Despite a slow start against Payal Nag, the world’s first quadruple amputee woman archer, Sheetal demonstrated remarkable resilience. Initially trailing, she regained her momentum in the third round, delivering precise shots that ultimately led her to victory in the decisive fifth round.
Payal, 17, who recently transitioned to a new shooting technique utilizing a single prosthetic leg, displayed outstanding sportsmanship but had to settle for silver. Her incredible journey and adaptability continue to inspire many in the para-archery community.
A Nail-Biting Women’s Compound Final
The spotlight was firmly on the women’s compound open final. Sheetal began the match with scores of 8 and 7, whereas Payal took an early lead with double 10s. However, in the third round, Payal’s form dipped slightly as she shot a 7, allowing Sheetal to take charge with consistent 9s and 10s.
The final round proved decisive, with Sheetal clinching the gold medal, further cementing her status as a champion in para-archery.

Sheetal’s Gratitude and Payal’s Inspiring Determination
After her victory, Sheetal expressed her gratitude:
“Firstly, Payal played very well in the final. With her dedication, she will surely win a medal for India soon. I am thankful for the blessings of Mata Rani that helped me win my second gold at the Khelo India Para Games.”
Meanwhile, the ever-determined Payal spoke about the challenges she faced:
“Earlier, I shot arrows using two devices in my prosthetic legs. Now, I use just one. Adjusting was tough, especially with the strong wind today, but I still made it to the final and won silver. That makes me happy.”
Payal Nag’s Remarkable Journey in Para-Archery
Payal’s coach, Kuldeep Vedwan, highlighted her inspiring story. According to him, Payal’s rebirth in para-archery began a month ago when she received a customized device for her prosthetic leg.
“Being the first woman archer in the world without all four limbs, it was a major challenge to develop a device inside her prosthetic leg. She now shoots using just one leg. Despite starting from scratch, her determination earned her a silver medal,” said Vedwan.
Payal remained philosophical about her struggles, stating:
“The heat, wind, and challenges on the field are nothing compared to the struggles we’ve endured in life. We must push through everything.”
The Khelo India Para Games 2025 showcased not only competitive spirit but also stories of perseverance, determination, and excellence in Indian para-sports. With athletes like Sheetal Devi and Payal Nag inspiring the nation, the future of Indian para-archery looks brighter than ever.
As the event concluded, the stories of these incredible athletes left a lasting impact on the para-sports community. With continued support and recognition, India’s para-athletes are set to achieve even greater milestones on the global stage.
