Union Budget 2026-27 Eco-friendly tourism in Jammu Kashmir

The Union Budget 2026–27 has delivered a major push toward eco-friendly tourism, with the Centre announcing the development of ecologically sustainable mountain trails in Jammu and Kashmir and several other environmentally sensitive regions across India.

Presenting the Budget in Parliament on Sunday, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the government’s commitment to balancing tourism growth with environmental conservation. As part of this green initiative, Jammu and Kashmir will see the development of carefully planned mountain trails designed to protect fragile ecosystems while creating new livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Sustainable Mountain Trails: A New Vision for J&K Tourism

The proposed sustainable mountain trails in Jammu and Kashmir aim to promote low-impact tourism by encouraging trekking, nature walks, and cultural exploration without harming the region’s delicate mountain ecology. These trails will follow eco-sensitive planning principles, focusing on soil conservation, biodiversity protection, and community participation.

By prioritizing sustainability, the initiative is expected to reduce unregulated tourism pressure while positioning J&K as a leading destination for responsible and eco-conscious travelers.

Similar Eco-Tourism Projects Across India

The Budget announcement also revealed that similar sustainable mountain trail projects will be developed in other hill and forested regions, including:

  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Uttarakhand
  • Araku Valley in the Eastern Ghats
  • Western Ghats region

These initiatives are designed to promote eco-friendly tourism, protect biodiversity hotspots, and ensure that tourism development does not come at the cost of environmental degradation.

Turtle Trails to Strengthen Coastal Conservation

In another significant green move, the Union Finance Minister announced the development of turtle trails along key nesting sites in Odisha, Karnataka, and Kerala. These trails will focus on conservation-led tourism, helping protect endangered turtle species while creating awareness among visitors and supporting local economies.

The turtle trail initiative reinforces India’s broader commitment to wildlife conservation, sustainable tourism, and climate-resilient development.

A Budget Focused on Sustainability and Conservation

The Union Budget 2026–27 clearly signals a shift toward nature-positive development, especially in ecologically sensitive regions. By integrating tourism with conservation, the Centre aims to generate employment, promote regional development, and preserve India’s natural heritage for future generations.

Experts believe that these initiatives could also help India strengthen its position as a global hub for sustainable tourism and eco-travel, particularly in mountain and coastal ecosystems.
