Indian Railways has announced a major update to its ticket booking system that will affect millions of passengers across the country. Starting October 1, 2025, only Aadhaar-authenticated users will be allowed to book general reserved tickets on the IRCTC website or mobile app during the first 15 minutes after reservations open.
This new rule, aimed at preventing misuse by ticketing agents and ensuring fair access for genuine passengers, extends the policy previously applied only to Tatkal bookings.
What Will Change from October 1?
From the effective date, when online booking for a train opens, passengers with Aadhaar verification will get the first 15-minute priority window to reserve seats.
- During this time, IRCTC-authorised agents will not be able to book tickets online.
- After 15 minutes, ticket agents can access the system and make reservations for others.
- However, computerised PRS counters across the country will continue to operate as usual without changes in timing.
Why Has the Railway Ministry Taken This Step?
According to the Railway Ministry’s circular, the move ensures that the benefits of the reservation system reach genuine passengers rather than being cornered by touts or middlemen.
Earlier, a similar 15-minute restriction was imposed for Tatkal bookings, which proved effective in preventing bulk reservations by agents. Based on its success, the ministry has decided to expand the rule to general reservation bookings as well.
How Will This Work in Practice?
Here’s a simple example to understand the change:
- If a train’s booking opens at 10:00 AM on October 1, only Aadhaar-authenticated passengers can book tickets online from 10:00 AM to 10:15 AM.
- After 10:15 AM, agents and other non-Aadhaar-authenticated users can book tickets through the IRCTC platform.
Officials clarified that the existing 10-minute restriction on agents booking general tickets at counters will remain unchanged.
What This Means for Passengers
- More Transparency: Genuine passengers will have better chances of booking tickets without competing with agents in the first few minutes.
- Reduced Misuse: Prevents misuse of the reservation system by touts who block seats in bulk.
- Fair Access: Everyday travelers stand to benefit most from this Aadhaar-based system.
IRCTC and CRIS Role in Implementation
The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and IRCTC have been directed to make necessary software modifications before October 1. These updates will ensure smooth Aadhaar-based verification and prevent technical glitches during the booking rush.
This policy is a game-changer for train ticket booking in India. By extending Aadhaar-based priority booking from Tatkal to general reservations, the Railways is ensuring fairer, transparent, and more passenger-friendly services.
Passengers planning to travel after October 1 should ensure their IRCTC accounts are linked with Aadhaar to take full advantage of the new system.
