Govt Cuts Medicine Prices

In a major win for healthcare affordability, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has announced significant price reductions for 35 essential medicines, making treatments for chronic and common conditions more accessible to the public. These reductions cover a wide spectrum of life-saving drugs, from antibiotics and anti-diabetics to cardiovascular and psychiatric formulations.

Let’s break down what this means for patients across India.

What’s Changing? New Price Control on Essential Medicines

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers issued a notification under the Drug Price Control Order (DPCO), based on NPPA recommendations. This order regulates the retail prices of key drug formulations that were previously more expensive.

The affected medicines include:

  • Anti-inflammatory drugs like Aceclofenac and Paracetamol combinations
  • Antibiotics like Amoxycillin with Potassium Clavulanate
  • Cardiovascular medicines like Atorvastatin with Clopidogrel
  • Oral anti-diabetics such as Empagliflozin, Sitagliptin, and Metformin
  • Psychiatric treatments and paediatric oral suspensions

These medicines are widely prescribed across India for managing conditions like arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, bacterial infections, and more.

How Much Will You Save? New Prices at a Glance

Some of the most impactful price cuts include:

  • Aceclofenac-Paracetamol-Trypsin Chymotrypsin tablet (Dr Reddy’s): ₹13
  • The same tablet by Cadila Pharmaceuticals: ₹15.01
  • Atorvastatin 40 mg + Clopidogrel 75 mg tablet: ₹25.61
  • Diclofenac injection: ₹31.77 per ml
  • Cefixime + Paracetamol oral suspension (Paediatric): Significantly reduced
  • Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D) drops: Also under new price control

This move is expected to bring huge financial relief, especially for those managing chronic illnesses that require regular and lifelong medication.

Mandatory Display of Updated Price Lists

Retailers and pharmacies must prominently display the updated price lists in their stores. Failure to comply can result in penalties under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and DPCO, 2013. Overcharging beyond the notified price could lead to recovery of excess amounts with interest.

What Pharmaceutical Companies Must Do

All manufacturers must:

  • Issue updated price lists using Form V through the Integrated Pharmaceutical Database Management System (IPDMS)
  • Submit revised prices to both NPPA and respective state drug controllers
  • Ensure statutory compliance with GST exclusions mentioned in the pricing

All previous pricing orders for these drugs now stand cancelled and replaced by this new notification.
