Kashmir Valley is reeling under an unprecedented heatwave, with Pahalgam and Srinagar registering record-high maximum temperatures for the month of April, officials from the Meteorological Department confirmed on Tuesday.
Pahalgam Records All-Time April High
Pahalgam, the serene tourist hotspot in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, recorded a staggering 27.8°C, which is 7.6°C above normal for this time of year. This marks the highest ever April temperature recorded in the area, surpassing the previous record of 27.4°C set on April 28, 1979.
Srinagar Hits Second-Highest April Temperature in 80 Years
Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, sizzled at 30.8°C, the second-highest April temperature ever recorded in the city. The record still stands at 31.1°C, set on April 20, 1946. Tuesday’s temperature was 7.7°C above the average for this season.
Heatwave Sweeps Across Valley
The Kashmir Valley continues to experience severe heatwave conditions, with day temperatures across all weather stations reported to be 5.5°C to 8.4°C above normal.
Dry Weather to Persist, Light Rain Likely on Thursday
According to the Meteorological Department, dry and hot weather will likely persist for the next 24 hours. However, isolated rain showers are expected on Thursday, offering some respite.
