The Jammu and Kashmir Government currently has over 32,000 vacant posts across 37 departments, with the Health and Medical Education Department reporting the highest number of 7,851 unfilled positions. The J&K Services Selection Board (JKSSB) and J&K Public Service Commission (JKPSC) have been assigned the task of filling 3,727 of these vacancies since the government formation on October 16 of last year.
Breakdown of Job Vacancies in Jammu & Kashmir Government
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also oversees the General Administration Department, provided details on these vacancies in response to a question raised by Peoples Conference MLA Sajad Gani Lone during an assembly session.
As of January 31, a total of 32,474 government jobs remain unfilled, classified as follows:
- Gazetted posts: 2,503
- Non-gazetted posts: 19,214
- Multi-tasking staff (MTS): 10,757
Among these, 738 gazetted, 1,754 non-gazetted, and 1,235 MTS posts have been referred to JKSSB and JKPSC for recruitment.
Department-Wise Vacancy Distribution in Jammu & Kashmir Government
The government provided a department-wise breakdown of job vacancies:
- Health & Medical Education: 7,851 vacancies
- Public Works (Roads & Buildings): 3,759 vacancies
- Animal Husbandry: 2,589 vacancies
- Industries & Commerce: 2,517 vacancies
- Housing & Urban Development: 2,420 vacancies
- Agriculture Production & Farmers Welfare: 1,340 vacancies
- Power Department: 1,305 vacancies
- Food & Supplies Department: 1,131 vacancies
- Finance Department: 1,009 vacancies
- Revenue Department: 1,004 vacancies
- Jal Shakti Department: 856 vacancies
- School Education Department: 770 vacancies
The Department of Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction is the only department with no vacant posts.
Recruitment Process & Hiring Plans
According to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the recruitment process has already started, with priority given to filling key roles in essential sectors. Some of the key recruitment plans include:
- School Education Department: 594 gazetted posts to be filled
- Health & Medical Education: 56 gazetted vacancies
- Power Department: 45 vacancies
- Horticulture Department: 41 vacancies
The government aims to accelerate recruitment through JKSSB and JKPSC to ensure that essential services remain operational.
Concerns Over Application Fees & Job Accessibility
In response to another question, the Chief Minister revealed that JKPSC collected over ₹8.44 crore, and JKSSB collected ₹5.72 crore in application fees from job applicants since October 16 of last year.
However, the government has no current plans to waive application fees for job seekers.
