Authorities have extended the ban on liquor and non-vegetarian food for an additional two months in Katra, the base camp for devotees visiting the revered Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district. This move aims to maintain the sanctity of the pilgrimage site and ensure a spiritually enriching experience for visitors.

Prohibition Areas and Enforced Regulations

According to officials, the prohibition order applies to a 12-km track stretching from Katra to the Mata Vaishno Devi holy cave on Trikuta Hill, along with its adjoining regions. The order will remain in effect for two months from the date of its issuance, unless revoked earlier by the authorities.

The directive, issued by Katra Sub-Divisional Magistrate Piyush Dhotra under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, strictly prohibits the sale, possession, and consumption of alcohol and non-vegetarian food within designated areas surrounding the shrine.

Extended Ban Areas Surrounding Mata Vaishno Devi

The prohibition extends beyond the pilgrimage route, covering several nearby villages and roads, including:

  • Within a 2-km radius on either side of the Katra to Vaishno Devi track, impacting villages such as Arli, Hansali, and Matyal.
  • A 200-metre stretch on both sides of Katra-Tikri Road, affecting Chamba, Serli, and Bhagta villages.
  • A 200-metre stretch on both sides of Katra-Jammu Road, including Kundrorian, Kotli Bajallian, Nomain, and Maghal villages.
  • A 200-metre radius on both sides of Katra-Reasi Road, covering regions from Katra to Nau Devian, Aghar Jitto, and Nau Devian markets.
  • A 200-metre area on both sides of the Katra-Sool Road near the railway station.
  • A 100-metre area on either side of the Panthal-Domail Road.
