In a moment that moved the entire nation, the mother of a young soldier who stared death in the face to save his comrades walked up to the President of India to receive his Vir Chakra (Posthumous) – India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award.
At the Defence Investiture Ceremony 2026 (Phase-1) held in New Delhi, President Smt Droupadi Murmu presented the coveted Vir Chakra 2026 to the family of Rifleman Sunil Kumar, a braveheart of the 4th Battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (4 JAK LI). The award was received by his tearful yet proud mother, Smt Sudesh Kumari, and his father, Shri Yash Paul.
The Sacrifice That Shook Jammu’s Trewa Village
Hailing from Trewa village in Bishnah block, Jammu district, 25-year-old Rifleman Sunil Kumar was no ordinary soldier. He was born into a family. His father, Yash Pal, is a retired soldier, and both his elder brothers are currently serving in the Army – one in Sikkim and the other in the Miran Sahib area of Jammu.
He was the youngest among four siblings, including a sister.
May 7, 2025: The Day Bravery Had No Limits
On 7 May 2025, while deployed at a forward border post in the volatile RS Pura-Arnia sector, Rifleman Sunil Kumar faced intense Pakistani shelling and cross-border gunfire. According to official sources, the enemy launched a heavy attack on the Abdullian Post, endangering the lives of every soldier on duty.
In the chaos of exploding shells, Sunil Kumar spotted a dangerous enemy armed payload – a threat that could have wiped out his entire post.
What happened next is now part of Indian Army folklore.
Showing complete disregard for his own safety, he stepped out of his bunker under heavy enemy fire. Armed with his Light Machine Gun (LMG), he engaged the incoming threat with precise, fearless firing. His actions successfully neutralized the danger, saving the lives of his fellow soldiers.
But in that act of supreme heroism, Rifleman Sunil Kumar sustained fatal injuries. He collapsed at his post, having given every ounce of his strength to the nation. He was just 25.
A Mother’s Pride, A Nation’s Tribute
On June 08, 2026, as the Defence Investiture Ceremony unfolded in the national capital, it was not just an award being handed over. It was a son’s promise fulfilled through his parents’ hands.

“India salutes this brave son of the soil,” an official spokesperson said. “His sacrifice will forever inspire generations.”
For the people of Trewa village and for every Indian who believes in duty beyond self, Rifleman Sunil Kumar’s Vir Chakra is not a medal – it is a reminder that ordinary young men from India’s villages can rise to extraordinary courage.
In an era where we often look for heroes on screens, Rifleman Sunil Kumar’s story brings us back to the real ones – the men who step out of bunkers while we sleep safely in our homes.
The Pakistani shelling in RS Pura sector (May 2025) was one of the many ceasefire violations along the Line of Control. But amid that violence emerged a story of selflessness that the Indian government and the Army ensured would never be forgotten – culminating in the Vir Chakra award 2026.
As Smt Sudesh Kumari held the Vir Chakra against her heart, she didn’t just receive a medal. She brought home the proof that her youngest son – Rifleman Sunil Kumar of 4 JAK LI – lived and died a hero.
Balidan Divas – 7 May 2025.
