A brother-sister duo was arrested with 550 grams of heroin, valued at Rs 70 lakh, during a police check on the outskirts of Jammu city on Thursday. The case highlights the growing role of families in drug trafficking networks and adds to the list of recent crackdowns on narcotics in the region.
Siblings from R S Pura Involved in Drug Smuggling
The accused have been identified as Gurjeet Singh and his sister Navneet Kour, residents of Tanda village in the R S Pura area. They were apprehended during a routine police check at the Balol checkpoint in Miran Sahib while riding a scooter.
Police conducted a thorough inspection and discovered 550 grams of heroin hidden on them. The scooter was also seized as evidence.
According to officials, the market value of the recovered heroin is approximately Rs 70 lakh on the international black market.
Mother of Accused Also Linked to Drug Trade
In a shocking revelation, police stated that the mother of the two accused had also been arrested by Punjab Police in June for her involvement in a drug trafficking case. This suggests that the drug operation may involve a family-run network.
Authorities now suspect a larger and more organized interstate drug trafficking ring, potentially involving multiple operatives and extended connections.
Financial Investigation and Drug Supply Network Underway
The investigation is currently focused not only on tracing the source and destination of the heroin but also on tracking the financial trail linked to the illegal narcotics trade. A forensic financial probe has been launched to uncover the proceeds of crime and any associated assets.
“We believe that interrogation of the accused will lead to more names and locations involved in the drug supply chain,” said a senior officer.
This case serves as a serious warning about the increasing trend of family involvement in drug trafficking, including the use of women in such operations.
An FIR has been registered against Gurjeet Singh and Navneet Kour under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The duo is currently in custody and will soon be presented before the court.
Authorities have vowed strict action against anyone found involved and continue to strengthen surveillance at key checkpoints across the Jammu region.
