Jammu, the winter capital capital of Jammu and Kashmir, today recorded its lowest temperature this season as mercury nose-dived nine notches below the normal amid incessant rains.
The mercury reached a maximum of 14.3 degree Celsius against yesterday’s 23.1, a Spokesperson of the Met department said.
The drop in the day temperature was due to prevailing weather conditions, which resulted in rainfall in the plains and snowfall in high-altitude areas, the official said.
The city received 26.2 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, the highest in over three months.
Not only this, heavy snowfall has been witnessed in the Leh region due to which, the Mughal road which links South Kashmir and Jammu region has been closed due to fresh snowfall in the region. Since Sunday, the Srinagar-Leh highway has also been closed for the winter months.
As per the advisory of traffic police department passengers planning to travel on the highway in coming days should contact traffic control room before leaving for their destinations.
Leh is the coldest place in the state, recording a minimum temperature of minus 9.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday night.
The Jammu and Kashmir government on Saturday asked the local administration to brace for heavy snowfall and rain from December 11, after a warning from the local meteorological department, PTI reported.
These weather activities are expected to continue until December 14. Thereafter, weather will clear up as the Western Disturbance will move away.
There was very heavy snow in hills of Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Kathua, Rajouri, Reasi and Poonch districts of Jammu region. As a result of which some inter-district and inter-state roads have been closed for traffic due to snow, The Tribune India reported.
The drop in the day temperature was the result of the prevailing weather condition which resulted in rain in the plains and snow in high-altitude areas.
This phenomenon will affect the state from December 11 to December 15, an official said, adding that “moderate to heavy rain or snow is expected in widespread places of Jammu, Kashmir and the Ladakh region”.
