Jammu and Kashmir witnessed heavy rainfall in the plains and fresh snowfall in the higher reaches on Monday, offering much-needed relief from the prolonged dry spell that had raised concerns over water shortages in the region.
Weather Forecast: Rain and Snow Expected in Higher Reaches
According to the Meteorological (MeT) department, light to moderate rainfall and snowfall are expected in the higher altitudes on Monday. Additionally, some regions in north and central Kashmir may experience moderate to heavy snowfall. The forecast suggests that dry weather will prevail from March 4 to March 9, with another spell of rain and snow anticipated between March 10 and March 12.
Relief from Dry Spell as Water Levels Rise
The persistent rainfall and snowfall over the past week have alleviated fears of a prolonged dry spell and potential drought in the Union Territory. The water levels in rivers, lakes, streams, and springs have significantly improved. Several perennial springs that had dried up due to a 50-day-long dry period in January and February have now resumed their natural flow, replenishing crucial water sources.
Impact of Chillai Kalan on Water Resources
Kashmir experienced only one significant snowfall during ‘Chillai Kalan,’ the harshest 40-day winter period that starts on December 21 and ends on January 30. This period plays a vital role in replenishing the perennial water reservoirs in the mountains, ensuring an adequate supply of drinking water and irrigation for the valley’s residents.
These reservoirs sustain all major water bodies in Jammu and Kashmir during the summer months. A lack of substantial snowfall in winter often leads to water scarcity during the hot summer season, affecting both drinking water supply and irrigation for agricultural lands.
Jal Shakti Department Steps In to Supply Water
Due to the prolonged dry spell, the local Jal Shakti department had already started supplying potable water to areas where perennial springs had run dry. The recent precipitation is expected to ease this crisis, ensuring a more stable water supply for the coming months.
Temperature Update Across Jammu and Kashmir
On Monday, temperatures varied across different regions of Jammu and Kashmir:
- Srinagar: 4.9°C (Minimum Temperature)
- Gulmarg: -4.3°C
- Pahalgam: -0.8°C
- Jammu City: 12.4°C
- Katra: 7.8°C
- Batote: 4.7°C
- Banihal: 3.6°C
- Bhaderwah: 3.4°C
The fresh spell of precipitation has not only replenished crucial water sources but has also brought a much-needed respite from the dry weather, ensuring a stable water supply for drinking and agricultural needs. With another spell of rain and snow expected in mid-March, authorities and residents remain hopeful for a well-balanced climate in the coming months.
