Crime against women is on the rise in Jammu & Kashmir. Statistics say that 3168 cases of crime against women were registered in the state in 2017 as compared to 2915 cases in 2016. Ironically 2017 has been safer in comparison to 2015 as the year witnessed 3539 registered crimes against women.
While there has been a clear rise in such crimes, the number of arrests have been lesser as compared to the previous year. While 3957 arrests were made in 2017, the number of arrests in 2016 was 3736.
Comparing the statistics of two years, 1.28 arrests were made in 2016 as compared to only 1.25 in 2017 in connection to crime against women.
The given statistics were presented by CM Mehbooba Mufti in the state assembly.

Crime against women includes rapes, gang rapes, kidnapping, molestations, outraging modesty, eve-teasing, dowry death cases, abatement of suicides, among others.
Although the statistics are alarming, it should not be inferred that only the crime against women is rise; it also implies that more women are coming forward to lodge complaints.
