Her father, Sharada Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana, served as a General and was also a son of Mohan Shumsher Rana. The marriage was arranged by their families in the traditional Indian manner and remained a lifelong partnership.

The couple had three children:

  • Vikramaditya Singh – The elder son and Yuvraj (crown prince). In 1987, he married Chitrangada Scindia, daughter of Madhavrao Scindia.
  • Ajatshatru Singh – The younger son, who later entered politics. He was elected to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly from the Nagrota constituency and served as a minister in the state government. He is He is married to Kunwarani Dr. Ritu Singh the daughter of a senior Army officer.
  • Jyotsna Singh – The only daughter, who married Dhirendra Singh Chauhan, belonging to Mainpuri.
