In a discovery that has sparked excitement among historians and alike, an ancient stone sculpture of Goddess Durga has been recovered from the River Jhelum in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
The rare artifact was found on December 25 by a local fisherman, Nazir Ahmad Latoo, son of Ghulam Mohammad Latoo, a resident of Shaltang/Zogyar. While fishing in the river, Nazir noticed the stone structure and immediately sensed its historical significance.
Demonstrating responsible civic conduct, he promptly informed Police Station Sheeri, Baramulla. Acting swiftly, the police team reached the spot and took the sculpture into safe custody to prevent any damage or misuse.
Officials later confirmed that after completing all necessary legal and procedural formalities, the ancient Durga sculpture was formally handed over to the Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums, Jammu and Kashmir for further examination, preservation, and documentation.
Experts believe the discovery highlights Kashmir’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, offering valuable insights into the region’s ancient religious and artistic traditions. The sculpture is expected to undergo detailed archaeological study to determine its exact age and historical significance.
