Several higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, including popular tourist destinations, experienced fresh snowfall today, while the plains were lashed by rain. The much-needed precipitation has ended the prolonged dry spell in the region and raised hopes of reducing the high rainfall deficit in the Union Territory.
Due to heavy snowfall in Banihal and Qazigund, authorities were forced to close the busy Jammu-Srinagar National Highway this evening. Additionally, the movement of oil and gas tankers was suspended through the Jawahar Tunnel and Patnitop section of the highway. Officials confirmed that a large number of vehicles remain stranded in Ramban, Nashri, Chenani, Qazigund, and Anantnag.
The Trikuta Hills, home to the revered Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, also received fresh snowfall. Consequently, helicopter and battery car services were suspended, though the on-foot pilgrimage continued despite rain.
