On this day, we remember and honor Maharaja Hari Singh (1895–1961), the last Dogra ruler of Jammu & Kashmir, whose legacy continues to shape history. His vision, courage, and stand for India at a critical time make his story one that every Indian should know.
A Leader Ahead of His Time
At the First Round Table Conference in London (1930), when many Indian princes sought to safeguard their privileges under British rule, Maharaja Hari Singh chose a different path. Unlike rulers who distanced themselves from the Indian freedom struggle, Hari Singh boldly declared:
“I have never disguised from my friends my warm support of the idea of an All-India Federation.”
This statement reflected not only his political wisdom but also his unwavering belief in India’s unity and future.

While acknowledging that Indian princes had obligations to the British Crown, Maharaja Hari Singh emphasized that they also held deep sympathy for the aspirations of their motherland. He supported India’s rightful place among nations, showing a remarkable balance of diplomacy and patriotism.
At the same conference, several rulers, including a representative from Hyderabad, voiced concerns about losing their autonomy, focusing instead on preserving privileges under British protection. Their stance stood in sharp contrast to Hari Singh’s forward-looking vision.
Hari Singh did not seek separation or isolation. Instead, he foresaw that the destiny of Jammu & Kashmir was tied to India’s destiny. His courage and foresight set him apart as a monarch who put nation before throne.
