Cancer cases in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir is facing a rapidly escalating cancer crisis, with newly released health statistics showing a sharp and consistent rise in cases over the past five years. According to official data, the region is now detecting an average of 38 new cancer cases every single day, underscoring the severity of the growing health emergency.

Recent figures shared by the Union Health Ministry reveal that Jammu & Kashmir reported 14,112 cancer cases in 2024, pushing the five-year cumulative tally to 67,037 cases.
The numbers highlight a steady, year-on-year increase:

  • 2020: 12,726 cases
  • 2021: 13,060 cases
  • 2022: 13,395 cases
  • 2023: 13,744 cases
  • 2024: 14,112 cases

Health experts describe this persistent rise as deeply concerning—especially because many of these cases are still being diagnosed at advanced stages, where treatment becomes far more challenging.

A detailed examination of the data shows clear differences in the types of cancers affecting men and women.

Most Common Cancers in Men

Among males, stomach cancer has emerged as the leading malignancy, accounting for nearly 20% of all cases. It is closely followed by lung cancer, which contributes 16% of the cancer burden among men.
Doctors note that dietary habits, smoking, and environmental exposure may be key drivers behind this trend.

Most Common Cancers in Women

For women in Jammu and Kashmir, breast cancer remains the most prevalent, representing 19% of all female cancer cases.
Stomach cancer has become the second most common cancer among women, contributing around 9%.
Additionally, esophagus and colon cancers form a significant share of the overall cancer load in both genders.

While improved detection plays a role, experts caution that lifestyle and environmental risks are contributing significantly to the surging numbers.

Health officials emphasize that large-scale awareness campaigns, timely screening, and community participation are vital to reduce late diagnosis and improve survival rates.

The growing statistics serve as a strong reminder: without immediate action, cancer will continue to place an overwhelming burden on families, communities, and healthcare systems across Jammu & Kashmir.
