Ramadan 2026 Starts After Crescent Moon Sighting in Jammu & Kashmir
The holy month of Ramadan officially begins on Thursday following the confirmed sighting of the crescent moon across several parts of Jammu and Kashmir. The announcement was made by Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam Farooqi after verified testimonies were received from multiple locations soon after Maghrib prayers.
After consultations with members of the moon-sighting committee and senior religious scholars, authorities confirmed that the first fast will be observed on Thursday, with Taraweeh prayers starting Wednesday night. The Grand Mufti extended warm greetings to the Muslim Ummah and urged people to dedicate the sacred month to prayer, patience, reflection, and compassion.
Ramadan marks a deeply spiritual period for Muslims, emphasizing self-discipline, charity, and community bonding. As families prepare for fasting, mosques across the region are already witnessing an increase in worshippers.
Ramadan Shopping Peaks Across Kashmir Markets
With Ramadan officially underway, markets throughout Kashmir have come alive with festive energy. From early morning till late evening, shoppers are flocking to bazaars to stock up on essentials for sehri and iftar.
In Srinagar, dry fruit shops and grocery outlets are experiencing a surge in footfall, especially in traditional market hubs. Dates, almonds, raisins, walnuts, cashews, and figs are flying off shelves as families prepare their Ramadan pantries.
Shopkeepers report strong demand for premium date varieties such as Ajwa, Kalami, Safavi, Marghoob, and Medjool. Imports from Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, Algeria, and Iran are also widely available, offering customers multiple quality and price options.
Dates continue to hold special religious significance, as Muslims traditionally break their fast with them. Alongside dates, many households now include fruits, snacks, and desserts in their iftar meals, reflecting evolving food traditions during Ramadan.
Wide Range of Dates and Dry Fruits Attract Buyers
Local vendors say customer awareness has grown significantly in recent years. Buyers now actively compare grades, sizes, and origins before making purchases. Prices vary depending on quality, but demand remains strong as Ramadan progresses toward Eid al-Fitr.
The festive atmosphere mirrors previous years, with families stepping out together to complete their Ramadan shopping. Streets glow with decorative lights, while bakeries and sweet shops prepare for increased orders.
Government Reviews Ramadan Arrangements for Public Convenience
To ensure smooth observance of the holy month, Omar Abdullah chaired a high-level review meeting to assess Ramadan preparedness. He directed concerned departments to take proactive steps to guarantee uninterrupted public services, efficient grievance redressal, and proper arrangements at major places of worship.
Authorities have also launched extensive market inspections across the Valley. Police teams, along with revenue and food safety officials, are checking grocery stores, meat shops, bakeries, and street vendors for hygiene standards, quality control, displayed rate lists, and overcharging. Officials confirmed that action has been taken against violators to protect consumers during the holy month.
As Ramadan begins, Kashmir embraces a unique blend of spirituality and celebration. From mosque prayers to bustling marketplaces, the region reflects the essence of togetherness and devotion. With administrative support in place and markets well-stocked, residents are set to observe Ramadan in a peaceful and meaningful way.
This sacred month not only strengthens faith but also reinforces compassion, generosity, and unity—values that resonate deeply across Jammu & Kashmir during Ramadan.
