Jammu and Kashmir’s Transport Commissioner Vishesh Paul Mahajan announced critical updates concerning auto and electric rickshaw operations in the region. The newly introduced regulations aim to provide affordable transportation while ensuring road safety and compliance with traffic norms.
Affordable Fares for Electric Rickshaws
The fare for electric rickshaws has been set at an economical ₹10 per kilometer per passenger for trips covering up to 6 kilometers. This initiative seeks to promote the use of eco-friendly vehicles while ensuring cost-effective travel for the public, as reported by Daily Excelsior Newspaper.
Mandatory Meters for Auto-Rickshaws
In a move to enhance transparency, the Transport Department has made meters compulsory for all auto-rickshaws operating in Jammu and Kashmir. This step will prevent overcharging and provide fair pricing for passengers.
Transport Commissioner Mahajan emphasized that strict penalties will be imposed on drivers caught overcharging or operating without valid permits.
Focus on Road Safety
Highlighting the pivotal role of drivers in maintaining road safety, the Commissioner urged all drivers to adhere to traffic rules and regulations. He noted, “Road safety is the primary responsibility of the driver.”
He also advised drivers to:
- Avoid speeding.
- Wear helmets for two-wheeler riders.
- Ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles.
Improvements in Driving License Services
Addressing concerns over delays in issuing driving licenses, Mahajan assured citizens that steps are being taken to resolve the issue. A new tender for license printing is almost finalized, and licenses will soon be delivered directly to applicants via post.
In the meantime, drivers and vehicle owners can access their driving licenses digitally using the Digilocker app, offering a hassle-free solution for carrying essential documents.
