Jammu & Kashmir Weather Alert: Heavy Rain, Flash Flood Risk, and School Closures in Multiple Districts

Weather in Jammu & Kashmir

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for parts of Jammu & Kashmir, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 12 hours. Extremely heavy rain is likely at one or two locations in Reasi, Udhampur, Jammu, Kathua, and Samba. Moderate to heavy showers are also expected in Rajouri, Doda, Ramban, and several parts of South Kashmir.

Flood & Landslide Risk

  • High possibility of flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas.
  • Significant rise expected in the Tawi, Chenab, and other rivers. Residents are urged to stay away from riverbanks, streams, and local Nalas.
  • Avoid standing near loose structures or temporary houses (kaccha houses).

Jammu & Kashmir Traffic Plan & Advisory for August 12, 2025

NH-44 (Jammu–Srinagar National Highway)
The Jammu–Rajouri National Highway faced a major blockage due to a landslide on Tuesday, bringing traffic to a halt. Restoration work is in progress.

  • LMVs (Passenger/Private Cars): Allowed from both directions (Jammu ↔ Srinagar), subject to weather and road conditions.
  • HMVs: Allowed only from Navyug Tunnel (Qazigund side) towards Jammu after road inspection. No HMV will be allowed after 4:00 PM. Traffic Control Units (TCU) Srinagar and Ramban will coordinate before releasing vehicles.

Kishtwar–Sinthan–Anantnag Road (NH-244)

  • LMVs and High-Powered Small Vehicles (HPSVs) allowed from both directions after clearance from NHIDCL.
  • Timings: Anantnag → Kishtwar (9:00 AM–3:00 PM) and Kishtwar → Anantnag (8:00 AM–4:00 PM).
  • No HMVs other than designated HPSVs permitted, as per official orders.

Srinagar–Sonamarg–Gumari Road (SSG Road)

  • Traffic allowed in a regulated manner after BRO clearance.
  • From Minamarg → Srinagar: 5:00 AM–10:00 AM.
  • From Sonamarg → Kargil: 11:30 AM–5:30 PM.
  • No vehicles allowed after cut-off timings.

Mughal Road (via Poonch)

  • LMVs allowed from both directions.
  • HMVs (up to ten tyres) allowed only from Poonch → Shopian between 7:00 AM–6:00 PM.

School Closures in Rajouri & Poonch

Authorities in Rajouri and Poonch districts have ordered the closure of all government and private schools on August 12, 2025, due to heavy rains and unsafe weather conditions. Officials have stressed that the measure is precautionary to ensure student safety.
