Weather Update Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir is currently facing an intense heatwave, with temperatures soaring significantly above the seasonal average. As per the latest weather forecast, the region will continue to experience dry and hot conditions for the next few days, further intensifying the heat-related challenges for residents.

IMD Issues Heatwave Warning

According to Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Director of the Meteorological Department, the weather will remain dry and extremely hot until Sunday. Most parts of Jammu and Kashmir are witnessing temperatures several degrees higher than the norm, increasing the likelihood of heatstroke and dehydration among the population.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has cautioned residents to prepare for two more days of intense heat. A slight change in weather is expected only by Monday, with possible light rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds at isolated places.

Jammu Records 40.2°C: Scorching Heat Continues

On Friday, the maximum temperature in Jammu touched 40.2°C, while the minimum remained at 22.6°C. These extreme conditions made it difficult for people to venture out, especially during peak afternoon hours.

Kashmir also remained under dry weather conditions. Cities like Srinagar saw clear skies and bright sunlight, intensifying the discomfort caused by the rising heat.

Kashmir and Jammu Temperatures Above Normal

Meteorological data indicates that:

  • In Kashmir, temperatures were recorded 3°C to 6°C above normal.
  • In Jammu division, temperatures were 3°C to 5°C higher than average.

This anomaly in the weather pattern is unusual for May and is causing concern for both the general public and health authorities.

Upcoming Rain Chances in Jammu and Kashmir

Despite the scorching heat, relief may be on the horizon. As per data shared by the Sam Vigyan Kendra, Srinagar, light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and dust storms is expected on 18th and 19th May across several parts of the Union Territory.

However, the weather will remain dry from 20th to 23rd May. During this dry spell, isolated regions may experience light drizzle, though significant relief from the heat is unlikely. On 24th and 25th May, cloud cover and intermittent light rain are predicted, especially in parts of Kashmir. Meanwhile, the Jammu region will mostly remain dry, increasing the risk of heat-related ailments.

Health Advisory: Stay Safe During the Heatwave

In response to the continuing high temperatures, health experts are advising residents to:

  • Drink ample water to stay hydrated.
  • Consume fruits with high water content, such as watermelon and cucumber.
  • Wear light cotton clothing to allow better air circulation.
  • Avoid stepping out in the afternoon, especially between 12 PM and 4 PM, when temperatures are at their peak.

Heatwave Poses Challenges for Farmers

While the heat is harsh on the general population, agricultural activities are also under stress. However, the weather department suggests that farmers continue their work as usual, especially since the weather is expected to stay dry until 23rd May. Awareness of upcoming rainfall events can help plan irrigation and other field tasks accordingly.

Rising Temperatures Call for Immediate Precaution

With the mercury crossing the 40°C mark, this ongoing heatwave is one of the most severe in recent years for Jammu and Kashmir. The combination of high temperatures, dry conditions, and low humidity is contributing to increased health risks, especially for vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions.

Impact on Daily Life and Mobility

The heat has started to impact routine life across towns and cities in both regions. Markets, streets, and public spaces are witnessing reduced footfall during daytime. Public transport systems are also reporting a drop in ridership due to discomfort caused by extreme heat.

Schools and Workplaces Take Measures

Some schools have started adjusting their schedules by:

  • Reducing school hours or starting early.
  • Encouraging hydration breaks during classes.
  • Advising students to wear loose uniforms and caps.

Workplaces are also shifting work timings and increasing awareness about staying hydrated.

Tourism Slows Down in Kashmir

The normally bustling tourism scene in Kashmir is also witnessing a slowdown. Tourists are seen avoiding outdoor activities during peak hours, and local tour operators are adapting itineraries to accommodate early morning or evening sightseeing.

Dust Storm Alert for Select Areas

The weather office has also warned of dust storms accompanied by light rain and thunderstorms in some regions on 18-19 May. These sudden weather changes may cause short-term disruptions in traffic, flight schedules, and outdoor activities.

Long-Term Outlook: When Will the Heat Subside?

Looking ahead, weather models suggest no major monsoon activity until the end of May. The region might continue to see above-normal temperatures, and the expected showers around 24th-25th May may bring only temporary relief.

Hence, precautionary measures and staying informed through official weather updates remain critical for all residents.

Conclusion: Stay Informed, Stay Safe

The ongoing heatwave in Jammu and Kashmir is a stark reminder of shifting climate patterns. While minor relief is forecasted in the coming days through scattered rainfall and thunderstorms, the broader outlook remains challenging.

Residents are advised to follow health guidelines, plan outdoor activities carefully, and keep an eye on local weather bulletins for timely updates.
