India Opens Baglihar and Salal Dam Gates Amid Tensions with Pakistan

Amid ongoing tensions with Pakistan, India on Sunday opened the floodgates of the Baglihar Dam in Ramban and the Salal Dam in Reasi, resulting in a significant rise in the Chenab River flow toward Pakistan. The decision was made as reservoirs had reached full capacity due to continuous rainfall in the region.

The Chenab River, which enters Pakistan from Akhnoor in Jammu, witnessed a notable surge. This development comes days after India put the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which escalated military conflict along the border and claimed several lives.

Indus Waters Treaty Remains on Hold

Despite a recent ceasefire agreement between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries, India has clarified that the punitive measures, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, will remain in place.

According to various media reports, the opening of dam gates was a technical necessity due to reservoir pressure and not directly linked to resuming or halting water flow to Pakistan. Media outlets suggest the status of water release remains unclear, and a decision on restoring pre-April 22 water flow is still pending.

India Reiterates Firm Stand on Terrorism

Officials reiterated that India’s countermeasures against Pakistan, announced on April 23, will continue. “Terrorism will not go unpunished,” sources emphasized, highlighting India’s firm resolve to take action against cross-border terror.
