Weather Update Jammu and Kashmir

A severe heatwave has gripped Jammu and Kashmir for the second day in a row, raising concerns amid a significant rainfall deficit this June. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed a 26% shortfall in precipitation in the Union Territory from June 1 to June 18, with only 29.5 mm of rainfall recorded against the normal 39.7 mm.

Samba and Kathua Hit Hard by Rainfall Deficit

Among all districts, Samba and Kathua have recorded the most alarming rainfall shortfalls, reporting 72% and 62% deficits respectively. Several other stations, including Srinagar, Budgam, Baramulla, Bandipora, Ganderbal, Kishtwar, Kulgam, Poonch, Reasi, Shopian, and Udhampur, have also reported below-average rainfall.

The only exception was Rajouri, which saw excess rainfall, while Anantnag, Doda, Jammu, Kupwara, and Ramban experienced normal precipitation levels.

Temperatures Soar Across Kashmir Valley

The heatwave has raised temperatures significantly across Kashmir, with Srinagar expected to cross 35°C in the coming days. On Wednesday, June 18, temperature recordings were as follows:

  • Srinagar – 32.5°C
  • Qazigund – 31.4°C
  • Pahalgam – 27.0°C
  • Kokernag – 30.8°C
  • Kupwara – 30.5°C
  • Gulmarg – 22.8°C

Renowned weather forecaster Faizan Arif Keng warned of persistent intense heatwave conditions across the Kashmir valley for at least the next three days.

Jammu Division Experiences Below-Normal Temperatures

While Kashmir burns under rising mercury levels, the Jammu division has seen slightly cooler-than-average temperatures. On June 18, the temperatures recorded were:

  • Jammu city – 37.6°C
  • Katra – 35.2°C
  • Bhaderwah – 30.8°C
  • Banihal – 29.4°C
  • Batote – 27.8°C

The IMD has predicted generally dry weather, although isolated places might receive brief showers or gusty winds.

June 21–22:

Cloudy skies with intermittent rain and thundershowers are likely at many locations across both Jammu and Kashmir divisions.

June 23–24:

The dry spell may return, with brief light rain or thundershowers expected only in isolated regions.

June 25–27:

A shift in weather is forecast, with widespread cloud cover and moderate rainfall at many places.

Agricultural Advisory and Flood Alerts Issued

The Meteorological Department has advised farmers to continue agricultural activities until June 20, given the expected dry weather.

However, a weather alert has been issued for June 21 and 22, warning of:

  • Moderate to heavy rainfall in parts of the Jammu division
  • Risk of flash floods
  • Possibility of landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable zones

Travelers and locals in hilly regions are advised to exercise caution, especially in landslide-prone areas.

Heatwave Preparedness: What You Should Know

With rising temperatures and dry conditions, residents are urged to take the following precautions:

  • Stay hydrated and avoid exposure during peak sun hours
  • Use sunscreen, umbrellas, and light cotton clothing
  • Farmers should plan their sowing and irrigation according to the latest advisories
  • Monitor weather updates from the IMD or Rajmarg Yatra App
  • Avoid unnecessary travel during heatwaves or predicted heavy rainfall periods

Jammu and Kashmir are currently witnessing a volatile weather pattern, combining intense heat, uneven rainfall distribution, and potential natural hazards like landslides and flash floods. As June progresses, residents, farmers, and authorities must remain alert and responsive to fast-changing weather conditions.

The next few days are crucial, not just for agriculture and travel, but also for ensuring public safety across the region.
