Extreme Weather Alert in Jammu & Kashmir: Heavy Rain, Cloudbursts & Landslide Risk Issued – Stay Safe!

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Jammu and Kashmir, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall in multiple districts over the next 40 hours. The warning includes a high risk of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides, urging residents to stay cautious and avoid vulnerable areas.

Districts on High Alert

According to the forecast, heavy rainfall is expected in the following districts:

  • Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Reasi, Udhampur, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar
  • Southern parts of Kashmir Division

Some areas may experience intense thunderstorms and gusty winds, increasing the risk of damage to loose structures and flooding in low-lying zones.

Flash Floods, Cloudbursts & Landslides Risk

The weather department has highlighted the possibility of:

  • Cloudbursts in hilly regions
  • Flash floods in streams and rivers
  • Landslides and mudslides in vulnerable areas
  • Waterlogging in towns and cities

Residents are strongly advised to stay away from rivers, Nallas, and unstable slopes during this period. Emergency services can be reached by dialing 112.

Snowfall Expected in Higher Reaches

Apart from rain, light snowfall is expected over higher mountain ranges, including:

  • Kishtwar, Sinthan Top, Margan Top, Zojila, Gumri Axis
  • High-altitude areas of Pahalgam and Shri Amarnath Ji Holy Cave
  • A few higher reaches of Bandipora

This sudden weather shift could impact road connectivity and pilgrimage routes.

Safety Advisory

Authorities have urged all residents and travelers to:

  • Stay indoors during heavy downpours
  • Avoid traveling through landslide-prone areas
  • Refrain from going near riverbanks and streams
  • Stay connected with official weather updates

The Directorate of School Education Jammu has announced that all government and private schools across Jammu Division will remain closed till August 26 due to the prevailing inclement weather conditions.
