Jammu and Kashmir continued to remain under the grip of severe cold weather on Friday night as dense cloud cover and intermittent rainfall were reported from several areas. According to the Meteorological Department (MeT), fresh snowfall is likely in higher altitude regions over the next few days, raising concerns over road connectivity and daily life.
Despite a slight improvement in night temperatures at a few locations, cold conditions persisted across most parts of Kashmir and parts of Jammu, officials said.
Freezing Nights Across Kashmir Valley
As per data compiled by Kashmir Weather, the Kashmir region experienced widespread cold during the night. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 0.4°C, while Qazigund and Pahalgam settled at minus 1.0°C each. Kupwara registered minus 0.7°C, and Kokernag recorded 0.8°C. The tourist resort of Gulmarg reported a minimum temperature of 2.0°C.
Several places witnessed sub-zero temperatures, with Pampore recording minus 2.0°C, Srinagar Airport minus 1.6°C, Awantipora minus 2.2°C, and Budgam minus 1.9°C. Anantnag and Baramulla recorded minus 1.4°C and minus 1.5°C, respectively.
Pulwama and Shopian remained among the coldest places in the Valley, recording minus 3.2°C and minus 2.9°C, respectively.
Meanwhile, Kulgam recorded 1.2°C, Ganderbal 0.5°C, and Sonamarg 0.7°C. Temperature data for Zojila Pass was unavailable, while Zethan Rafiabad remained non-functional.
Jammu Region Records Relatively Milder Temperatures
In contrast, the Jammu region witnessed comparatively milder weather conditions. Jammu city recorded a minimum temperature of 9.3°C, while Banihal reported 3.8°C, Batote 9.3°C, and Katra 10.0°C.
Bhaderwah registered 4.4°C, Kathua 8.8°C, and Jammu Airport recorded 11.0°C. Udhampur settled at 4.0°C, Ramban at 6.5°C, Samba at 5.6°C, and Rajouri at 3.8°C. Kishtwar and Reasi recorded 8.3°C and 8.4°C, respectively, while temperature data for Doda was not available.
Snowfall Alert Issued
Weather experts have advised residents, especially those living in upper reaches, to remain cautious as fresh snowfall is expected, which may impact traffic movement and daily activities.
The MeT Department has forecast rain and snowfall across parts of Jammu and Kashmir from the evening of December 20 till December 23, urging people to stay updated with official weather advisories.q
