Chikri Woodcraft of Rajouri

Nestled in the peaceful and picturesque hills of Rajouri, Jammu & Kashmir, the timeless art of Chikri woodcraft continues to thrive. This traditional craft, practiced for centuries, transforms the soft and honey-colored Himalayan Boxwood—locally known as Chikri—into elegant handmade masterpieces. More than a source of income, Chikri woodcraft reflects the region’s cultural identity, its deep connection with nature, and an artistic heritage carefully preserved across generations.

The prestigious GI tag awarded in August 2023 marked a significant milestone for Rajouri’s Chikri artisans. This recognition officially validates the craft’s authenticity, craftsmanship, and geographical origin in the Rajouri hills. Supported by NABARD, the GI tag now protects the intellectual property rights of the craft, prevents unauthorized duplication, enhances market value, and brings global attention to this cherished Jammu handicraft.

The process of creating Chikri woodcraft requires precision and patience. Artisans begin by selecting high-quality Chikri wood, shaping it using traditional hand tools, and carving it with intricate detailing. The product is then finely sanded and polished to achieve a smooth, glossy finish. Many pieces are further embellished with delicate patterns or ornamental inlay work. The craft dates back to the Mughal era, later flourishing under Dogra rule, and remains famous for items like the iconic double-sided Chikri comb, known for its ultra-fine teeth and stunning “jail” (mesh) carving.

Despite its beauty and cultural significance, the craft faces challenges. The availability of raw wood has steadily declined, while the prices artisans receive for finished products remain almost unchanged. Yet, the dedication of local craftsmen—especially in the Rajouri–Poonch region—keeps this heritage alive. Their skill, discipline, and ancestral knowledge continue to nurture a vibrant cottage industry that breathes life into every piece of Chikri wood.

Chikri woodcraft stands as a symbol of harmony between human creativity and the natural world. By embracing sustainable practices and respecting our environment, we can ensure that this unique art continues to inspire future generations.

Rajouri’s Chikri woodcraft is not just a craft—it is a living blend of art, culture, tradition, and Himalayan beauty. Its GI-tagged recognition shines as a beacon of hope, guiding us toward a future where heritage and nature coexist in perfect balance.
