In the past, many excavation sites have been discovered bringing us closer to ancient civilisations and their precious monuments. Here are four interesting things you should know about 1200 year old sculpture discovered in Budgam:
- The sculpture was discovered near a river bed of Jhelum in Budgam. The Budgam police clarified that the sculpture is nearly 1200-year-old and is evidently a motif of Goddess Durga and the sculpture was retrieved on August 13 from river Jhelum at the Pandthrethan area of Khan Sahib area of Budgam district by labourers while extracting sand.
- The motif found by the labourers while mining was of black stone as confirmed by the local police. The sculpture was handed to the Deputy Director, Department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums,Mushtaq Ahmad Beigh led by the Senior Superintendent of Police Tahir Saleem Khan and his team.
- The sculpture reportedly is about 12 inches by 8 inches (24 cm by 20 cm) of 7th century with goddess Durga seated on a lion throne along with four attendants.
- During the examination, it was revealed that the recovered sculpture of goddess Durga dates back roughly to the 7th or the 8th century AD,
According to the Budgam police the idol is in very good condition and the archaeology department is trying to find out where it was installed.
