The latest figures of the J&K Police show an increase in domestic violence and matrimonial disputes in Jammu.
As many as 2,402 complaints related to domestic violence have been reported in Jammu in the past one-and-a-half years. In a majority of the cases, mental and physical harassment is the main reason attributed by the complainant.
In 2016, out of 1,359 cases, 1,239 were resolved and 67 were taken to court. In 2017, out of 1,073 cases, 746 were resolved and 43 were legally handled. The figure rose sharply to 1,665 in 2018 at the Women Police Station, Gandhi Nagar, Jammu, and 737 complaints were lodged till June 2019.

“Mostly the cases we receive are related to matrimonial disputes. Our priority is to counsel couples to resolve their issues and save the marriage so that the child doesn’t suffer. But for those who don’t show any positive response, we have no option but to take legal action,” she added.
The fact that more people are coming forward and reporting family violence to police, however this is revealing the true scale of the family violence emergency that our community faces.
