It began not with a bang, but with a poster. In early November, the reappearance of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) posters in Srinagar’s Nowgam area—a sight unseen since 2019—was a chilling signal. For SSP Dr. G.V. Sundeep Chakravarthy, it was a clue that demanded action. His decision to probe deeper ignited an investigation that would soon be hailed as one of India’s largest terror busts.
The breakthrough came swiftly. On November 2, the Srinagar police apprehended two Overground Workers (OGWs) carrying the posters. What followed was a masterclass in investigative policing. Under the SSP’s leadership, the team at the Nowgam police station, began connecting the dots.
The interrogation of the OGWs revealed a sophisticated trans-national terror module. Their handler was identified as Moulvi Irfan Ahmad, a prayer leader from a local mosque in Nowgam, operating from Shopian. This critical lead opened the floodgates.
The investigation took a dramatic turn when the imam revealed the involvement of Kashmiri doctors working outside J&K. Acting on this, a special team was dispatched to Uttar Pradesh. In a coordinated operation with local police, they arrested Dr. Adeel Ahmad Rather from a private hospital in Saharanpur on November 6.
Dr. Rather’s interrogation was pivotal. He led investigators to an AK-series rifle hidden in a medical college locker and, more alarmingly, revealed information about massive quantities of explosives stored by associates.
The next target was Dr. Muzamil Ahmad Ganaie, arrested in Pulwama while attending his sister’s wedding. He directed police to his rented room in Faridabad, Haryana, where a staggering 2,900 kg of explosive material was recovered. The plot thickened further with the revelation that Dr. Ganaie worked at the same Faridabad hospital as Umar Nabi, a key suspect in the Delhi blast case.
A Career Defined by Gallantry and Strategy
This is not the first time Dr. Chakravarthy has demonstrated exceptional leadership. He was the architect of the successful Operation Mahadev, which neutralized the terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam attack. His career has been a tour of duty through some of Jammu & Kashmir’s most challenging postings—Uri, Baramulla, Kupwara, Kulgam, and Anantnag.
His bravery is legendary and officially recognized. He is a six-time recipient of the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry, a four-time honoree with the J&K Police Medal for Gallantry, and has even received the Indian Army Chief’s Commendation Disc.
The Man Behind the Badge: From Doctor to IPS Officer
Before he wore the police uniform, Dr. Chakravarthy served with a stethoscope. A graduate of Kurnool Medical College, his unique journey from healing patients to protecting a nation adds a profound layer to his profile. This background in medicine likely contributes to his methodical, evidence-based approach to policing. A fitness enthusiast and dancer, he embodies a rare balance of intense focus and graceful composure.
The story of this major terror bust in India is more than a news headline. It is a powerful testament to how one officer’s courage, intelligence, and empathy can stand between peace and catastrophe. SSP Srinagar, Dr. G.V. Sundeep Chakravarthy, didn’t just see paper on a wall—he read the writing on it and acted before it could become an epitaph.
