Weather in Jammu & Kashmir

The India Meteorological Department (IMD), through its MET Centre in Srinagar, has issued a nowcast weather alert for the districts of Rajouri, Ramban, Reasi, and Udhampur in Jammu region. The forecast predicts moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms over the next 2 to 3 hours, raising concerns of flash floods, landslides, and related hazards.

The IMD has warned of flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable zones, especially:

  • National Highway-44 (especially Ramban–Banihal sector)
  • Hilly roads in Rajouri and Reasi
  • Low-lying areas in Udhampur and Katra regions

These events are common in the region during intense monsoon spells and have historically caused traffic disruptions, infrastructure damage, and sometimes even casualties.

Warning:

  • Isolated Ts/lightning/Gusty winds (30-40 kmph)/ intense shower at scattered places during 4th to 6th august in J&K.
  • Heavy Rain at isolated places of Jammu division during 4th to 6th august.
  • Flashfloods/Landslides/ Mudslides/Shooting stones at few vulnerable places.
  • Rise in water level in Rivers/Streams and water logging in few low-lying areas.

Traffic & Amarnath Yatra Update

Due to the weather advisory, traffic police and BRO (Border Roads Organisation) may enforce temporary halts or traffic control measures along the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway, particularly around Ramban and Banihal sectors.

As of now, there is no official suspension of the Amarnath Yatra, but pilgrims have been urged to adhere strictly to weather advisories and only proceed with official clearance.

Flashback: Vulnerability in the Region

Jammu’s mountainous districts are geologically fragile and particularly vulnerable to rainfall-induced disasters:

  • Ramban & Reasi have recorded multiple landslide incidents each monsoon.
  • Rajouri often faces localized flooding in river valleys.
  • In August 2021, a cloudburst in Reasi led to flash floods, cutting off several villages.

This context underscores the importance of immediate preventive action and public awareness.
