In welcome news for residents and farmers alike, the India Meteorological Department on Monday said that Jammu and Kashmir is expected to experience mostly dry and stable weather till February 26, with no major rain or snowfall forecast during this period.
Confirming the update, Mukhtar Ahmad, Director MeT Srinagar, stated that the overall weather across the Union Territory will remain largely calm, though brief light snowfall may occur over isolated higher reaches on select days.
What the Latest Forecast Says
According to the official outlook:
- February 17: Possibility of light snowfall over isolated higher altitudes
- February 18–24: Weather expected to remain predominantly dry
- February 25–26: Skies likely to be partly to generally cloudy
- February 27–28: Partly cloudy conditions with chances of light rain or snow over higher reaches, especially by evening or night on Feb 28
- March 1–2: Generally cloudy weather with light snowfall at isolated higher elevations
The department also noted that both minimum and maximum temperatures are likely to rise gradually across most parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the coming week, bringing relief from the recent cold spell.Good News for Farmers, Caution for Hill Residents
With weather conditions remaining favourable, farmers have been advised to continue agricultural activities without disruption. However, residents living in snow-bound and higher areas have been urged to avoid avalanche-prone zones and steep slopes, as a precautionary safety measure.
Officials reiterated that while the current spell offers stability, people in vulnerable regions should remain alert to sudden localized changes.
