Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for another spell of widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for the next 48 hours. Authorities have stepped up preparedness, warning residents about possible flash floods, thunderstorms, and landslides across vulnerable regions of the union territory.
IMD Weather Forecast for J&K
According to IMD officials, the weather will remain generally cloudy with intermittent spells of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms over the next two days. However, certain districts are expected to face intense rainfall, raising concerns about flooding and disruption.
- Heavy to very heavy rainfall: Jammu, Kathua, Udhampur, Reasi
- Moderate to heavy rainfall: Doda, Samba, Rajouri, Poonch, Kishtwar, Ramban, Anantnag, and Kulgam
Officials further cautioned that rainfall is likely to peak during the late-night hours and continue till tomorrow afternoon, intensifying the risk of flash floods in low-lying and mountainous areas.

The red alert highlights the increased possibility of cloudbursts, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in several vulnerable districts. Rivers, streams, and seasonal nallahs are expected to swell, posing threats to settlements near riverbanks and hilly terrains.
Authorities have advised residents to stay away from water bodies, loose soil slopes, and fragile structures. Movement in landslide-prone areas should be avoided, particularly during nighttime when visibility is low.
Precautionary Measures by District Administrations
In response to the red alert, district administrations across J&K have activated emergency helplines and control rooms that will operate 24×7 to assist citizens. Rescue and relief teams have been placed on standby, and advisories have been circulated in flood-prone villages and towns.
Citizens have been urged to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas.
- Keep emergency contacts and essential supplies ready.
- Stay updated with weather bulletins issued by the IMD.
- Follow local administration guidelines strictly.
IMD officials have stressed that while rainfall is part of the monsoon cycle, the intensity and frequency of extreme weather events have increased in recent years, demanding extra caution. Citizens in mountainous belts and near streams must remain vigilant as sudden cloudbursts can lead to life-threatening situations within minutes.
