In a precautionary move to safeguard public order, the Jammu and Kashmir Home Department has temporarily suspended mobile data services in select areas of Kishtwar district, citing potential security threats.
According to an official order, mobile internet services including 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G have been shut down in Singhpora, Chingam and Chatroo starting 12:01 am on January 29, 2026, and will remain suspended till 11:59 pm on January 30, 2026.
The decision has been taken to prevent misuse of high-speed mobile data by anti-national elements, officials said.
The order was issued by Principal Secretary (Home), Chandraker Bharti, following specific security inputs from the Inspector General of Police, Jammu Zone, who is the authorised officer under the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024.
Authorities clarified that the internet shutdown covers a six-kilometre radius around each of the identified locations in Kishtwar.
Officials noted that unrestricted mobile internet access could be exploited by miscreants, leading to law-and-order disturbances and posing a serious threat to the security of the Union Territory.
“The suspension has been imposed in the interest of the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of Jammu and Kashmir, and the maintenance of public order,” the Home Department stated.
The shutdown has been formally confirmed under provisions of the Telecommunication Act, 2023, along with the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Service Rules, 2024, giving it full legal backing.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm and cooperate, assuring that the restrictions are temporary and purely preventive in nature.
