Chamunda Mata Temple Yatra in Ramban: A Sacred Journey Amidst the Himalayas

Nestled in the breathtaking Pogal-Paristan region of Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district lies the revered Shri Chamunda Mata Ji Temple. Perched at an altitude of approximately 14,000 feet above sea level, this sacred shrine is dedicated to Mata Chamunda Devi, a fierce incarnation of the divine feminine who vanquished the demons Chanda and Munda, earning her the name “Chamunda”.

Each year, from June to August, thousands of pilgrims embark on a spiritually charged Chamunda Mata Yatra, organized by the Shri Mata Chamunda Mandir Development Committee, a tradition continued since 2003.

A Glimpse into Sarvadhar – The Sacred Land

The Sarvadhar region, where the temple is situated, is known for its panoramic views that span across the Deesa region of Doda and the Paristan valley of Ramban. It stands as one of the highest and most picturesque spots in the entire region, covered in snow during winter but blooming with life during the summer pilgrimage season.

From June to August, Sarvadhar becomes a hive of spiritual activity, with devotees from Doda, Ramban, Udhampur, Jammu, and beyond journeying to pay their respects to the Divine Mother.

Origins of the Chamunda Yatra: From Melas to Spiritual Pilgrimage

According to Devotee, a local from the scenic village of Seenabhati and a key contributor to the Yatra, the region initially celebrated two significant fairs:

  • Mundasoo Mela – A one-day event held at Sarvadhar, drawing thousands.
  • Seenabhati Mela – A grand three-day gathering that brought together people from surrounding villages.

Over time, these festive gatherings evolved into a formal Chamunda Yatra, celebrated with deep devotion and spiritual energy.

Base Camp at Seenabhati: The Beginning of the Sacred Trek

The journey begins at the beautiful village of Seenabhati, nestled in lush green meadows and surrounded by towering mountain ranges. This village serves as the base camp for the pilgrimage, offering a serene and pollution-free environment for devotees to rest before beginning the uphill trek.

Pilgrims spend the night here, rejuvenating in nature’s lap. Community kitchens (langars) provide food and hospitality to the yatris, reflecting the spirit of selfless service and community bonding.

The Spiritual Trek to Chamunda Mata Temple

Early the next morning, devotees embark on the journey to the holy shrine. The trek to Mata Chamunda Ji’s temple is not just a physical climb but a deeply spiritual ascent. The path winds through small villages, scenic landscapes, and mountain trails echoing with the sounds of bhajans, kirtans, and the rhythmic beat of traditional drums.

The atmosphere is filled with religious fervor, dancing, singing, and chanting, creating a powerful sense of devotion and community. The Yatra halts at the Sharvadhar base camp, where pilgrims spend another night before reaching the shrine the following day.

Arrival at the Holy Shrine: A Divine Experience

The final destination is a vast alpine meadow adorned with colorful wildflowers, offering a serene and spiritually uplifting atmosphere. Here stands the sacred Chamunda Mata Temple, where devotees gather for Chhari Poojan—a ceremonial worship of the holy mace.

This ritual, accompanied by sacred mantras and devotional music, serves as the emotional and spiritual climax of the Yatra. Pilgrims then offer their prayers, seek blessings, and express their gratitude at the feet of Mata Chamunda.
