Impact of Unpaid Electricity Bills on Jammu & Kashmir’s Power Sector

The massive pending dues pose a serious financial strain on the power sector in Jammu & Kashmir. These outstanding payments limit the ability of power companies to maintain and upgrade infrastructure, leading to frequent power outages and operational inefficiencies. If the issue remains unresolved, it could significantly impact the overall energy supply and economic stability in the UT.

Government’s Amnesty Scheme for Bill Payments

In an effort to recover unpaid dues, the Jammu & Kashmir government has introduced an amnesty scheme to encourage consumers to clear their electricity bills. According to official data:

  • 2,75,081 consumers have registered under the scheme.
  • 1,60,507 consumers belong to the Jammu division.
  • 1,14,587 consumers are from the Kashmir division.

The amnesty scheme offers incentives such as waivers on penalties and interest, making it easier for consumers to clear their dues and prevent future power supply disruptions.

The high outstanding electricity dues in Jammu & Kashmir, particularly from government departments, are a serious concern. Immediate actions, including strict enforcement, smart metering, and increased accountability, are necessary to prevent further financial losses and ensure stable power distribution across the UT. The government’s amnesty scheme is a positive step towards recovering dues, but more needs to be done to resolve the ongoing crisis effectively.
