Dogra Soldiers in the First World War

During World War I (1914–1919), Maharaja Pratap Singh of Jammu and Kashmir made significant contributions to the British war efforts, aligning closely with the British Empire. Under his leadership, Dogra Soldiers were dispatched to various war fronts across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, showcasing exceptional bravery and earning international recognition. Dogra soldiers fought in First World War as a part of the British Indian Army – 37th (Prince of Wales’s Own) Dogras, 38th Dogras, 41st Dogras.

Dogra Troops in Global Battlefronts

One of the most prominent units, the 41st Dogra Regiment, was sent to France, where it played a crucial role in the war effort. The regiment demonstrated outstanding valor, earning gallantry awards for their service. Notably, Lance Naik Lala, a soldier from the Dogra regiment, was honored with the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration awarded for valor “in the face of the enemy” within the British and Commonwealth forces.

Campaigns Across Continents

The Dogras weren’t limited to Europe alone. They led major campaigns in:

  • Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq)
  • Palestine
  • Egypt

These campaigns were critical to the Allied war effort, and the Dogra soldiers were lauded for their tactical strength, resilience, and unwavering loyalty under extreme conditions. A major portion of the Jammu Kashmir State Forces participated in World War 1. The Imperial Service from Regiment saw action in East Africa, Palestine and Mesopotamia and won the Battle Honours of Megiddo, Nablus, Kilimanjaro, Beho Beho, East Africa, Palestine and Sharon. During World War I (1914-1919) the Kashmir Imperial Service Corps not only earned the title of the most “reliable” troops, but the personnel of the regiment were awarded 31 decorations.
