Insights About the  Z-Morh Tunnel

The Z-Morh Tunnel gets its name from the Z-shaped stretch of road it replaces. "Z-Morh" translates to "Z-turn" in Hindi, representing the challenging terrain it overcomes.

The tunnel spans 6.5 km and connects Gagangir and Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district, replacing the avalanche-prone Z-turn road.

Situated at an altitude of 2,637 meters (8,652 feet), the tunnel is a two-lane structure with a width of 10 meters. It includes a 7.5-meter-wide escape passage designed for emergencies and dual use as a railway tunnel.

Built using the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), the Z-Morh Tunnel can handle up to 1,000 vehicles per hour, with speeds of up to 80 kmph.

The Z-Morh Tunnel is part of NH1, connecting Srinagar to Leh. Approved at a cost of ₹24 billion, it ensures all-weather connectivity.
