Why Jammu was powerless for 24 hrs?

Nearly 20 lakh people in the Jammu region have been facing the sweltering heat without electricity for the past 24 hours after a 220-KV transmission line from the Salal power project snapped.electricity jammu kashmir

The region is facing a shortfall of 200 MVA with Jammu and Rajouri districts being without regular power supply since Saturday noon.

One of the two 220-KV transmission lines from Salal Power House to Gladni Grid Station, Jammu, snapped  on the afternoon of June 29.

Although officials in the Power Development Department (PDD) said electricity would be restored soon as engineers of Power Grid Corporation Limited are on the job to repair the cable, it has once again raised a question mark on the health of the distribution network that has not been overhauled for years due to lack of funds.

“Engineers are on the job. Till then, we will supply power on a rotational basis,” said Sudhir Gupta, Chief Engineer, EM&RE Wing, Jammu.

Technical faults are regular in power distribution lines during summers in J&K. On April 16 last year, an overheated current transformer connecting high-tension lines with Gladni-Sidhra-Janipur line caught fire, disrupting power supply for days. — TNS
