Civic polls 2018 Jammu and Kashmir Phase 2: Top 7 Facts You Need To Know

After the completion of the first phase of the urban local bodies elections on Monday, the focus has shifted to the polling for the second phase scheduled for Wednesday.

Here is your 7-point on J-K Municipal Elections 2018 2nd phase:

1. As many as 3,46,980 voters will decide the fate of 1,029 candidates contesting the elections for 263 wards (214 in Jammu and 49 in Kashmir) spread over a dozen districts of the state. In the second phase, elections will be held across the state —- from Lakhanpur, the gateway to J&K, to Langate, the remotest area of Kupwara district in north Kashmir.vote jammu kashmir phase 2

2. A total of 1,029 candidates 881 are in the fray from the Jammu region and 148 from the Kashmir valley. In the fray in 263 wards in Kathua, Udhampur, Kishtwar, Reasi, Doda, Ramban districts of Jammu region; and Anantnag, Kupwara, Srinagar, Baramulla, Bandipora, Badgam and Kulgam districts of the valley. As many as 65 candidates have already been elected unopposed while 40 wards have seen no nominations.

3. Nearly 80 per cent of over 1.26 lakh voters exercised their franchise in Jammu while there was a low voter turnout yet again in Kashmir with 3.4 per cent of 2.20 lakh electorate casting their votes Wednesday in the second phase of municipal polls in the state.

4.  The second phase witnessed overall voter turnout of 31.3 percent out of total electorate of 3.47 lakh in the state.

5.  The low voter turnout in Kashmir was in line with a meagre 8.3 per cent turnout in the valley during the first phase of polling, when the Jammu and Ladakh divisions had witnessed over 65 per cent of voting.

6.Nineteen wards of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, having an electorate of 1.78 lakh, witnessed a turnout of just 2.3 per cent.

7. A Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, Azad Singh, died of cardiac arrest in Ramban immediately after casting his vote.

The next phases are scheduled to take place on October 13 and 16.
