The state of Jammu Kashmir has always failed to acknowledge the last Maharaja of the state. Successive governments with directions from Kashmir based politics has always tried to undermine the role and significance of Maharaja Hari Singh. Jammu has always demanded and is still demanding a state-wide holiday on the birth anniversary of the Maharaja.
Here are a few facts about Maharaja Hari Singh, you should know:
His full name with all the epithets was Lieutenant-General His Highness Shriman Rajrajeshwar Maharajadhiraj Sri Sir Hari Singh Indar Mahindar Bahadur, Sipar-i-Sultanat, Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, GCSI, GCIE, GCVO.He was the nephew of the preceding Maharaja of Jammu Kashmir General Raja Sir Amar Singh Jamwal.
He made primary education compulsory in the state which made him a pioneer of education in the state.

He introduced laws prohibiting child marriage, and opened places of worship to the low castes; which shows his generous and progressive nature.
Although he died in Bombay, his ashes were spread all over Jammu Kashmir and immersed in river Tawi, according to his last wish.
