It is a distinctive style of paintings which evolved during the 17th and 18th century in Basohli and nearby hill states of present day Himachal Pradesh.
-
Notable highlights of the style are big eyes, bright colours, geometric patterns and accentuated jewellery made by beetles’ wings.
-
Most Basohli paintings depict scenes from Radha-Krishna and other Hindu stories of gods and godesses.
-
The style spread from Basohli to neighbouring hill states of Mankot, Nurpur, Kullu, Mandi, Suket, Bilaspur, Nalagarh, Chamba, Guler and Kangra.
-
This painting style further inspired the Kangra painting style.
